ECR Secondment & Internship Scheme

Funded ECR Secondments & Internships

In 2021 we launched our Early Career Researcher (ECR) Secondment and Internships Scheme. Within this we invited ECRs to apply for funding up to £5k per project to allow them to undertake Agri-food related projects through a secondment in an STFC department, or within an industry, policymaker, or civil society organisation. These secondments are intended to support the career development of Food Researchers (broadly defined) or researchers working in fields covered by STFC and run for up to 6 months. We funded the following project in 2021:

Project Title - Species identification using sRGB image technology for field based biomonitoring of agricultural ecosystem
ECR - Rajneesh Dwevedi (Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi)
Secondment Supervisor - Dr Melina Zempila (STFC RAL Space)
Project Summary - The proposed placement aims to develop a method to monitor soil fauna in the agricultural field using a commercial RGB camera. The placement will be focussed on testing the ability of such an imaging technology to be adapted in the field. In general it will be a method which can be used by a layman/farmer to monitor the soil biodiversity and interpret the condition of the agricultural ecosystem.
