SFN Sandpit 2022 - Innovations for Net Zero+ Food Systems

Where: Online, with optional in-person event at STFC Hartree Centre Amount: Up to £25k Deadline for EOIs: ***EXTENDED Friday 13th May 2022, midnight BST*** The STFC Food Network+ invites Expressions of Interest for our Hybrid Sandpit 2022. This sandpit aims to bring together experts from food systems research, industries, policy, and STFC scientists to innovate and co-design Proof of Concept projects (~£25K) that use data science and game-changing technologies to build Net Zero+ food systems with a core focus on reducing GHG emissions while addressing other key socio-environmental and economic sustainability issues. We encourage applications from people with interests in agriculture, food production, supply chains, nutritional security and consumer behaviour in the UK and beyond (Africa and Asia) through the applications of data science, space technologies and STFC facilities. We aim to fund around 3 projects via the Sandpit with up to 8-10 further projects via an open call. Successful applicants will be notified by Thursday 19th May 2022.
Who should apply? Agri-food researchers, industry, and civil society organisations; STFC researchers; other scientists and technologists working in robotics, AI, sensing technologies, space science and astronomy, particle/nuclear physics, and data science. Priority will be given to STFC researchers, non-academic partners, and those involved in projects that have been funded by the SFN. Dates/Times The Sandpits will take place between 13th-23rd June 2022, with with a face-to-face networking event on Thursday 16th June, and project pitches taking place online on Thursday 23rd June. Please note that attendance at the in-person event at STFC Daresbury/The Hartree Centre will be limited to 40 participants to comply with air quality rules at the facility. As a result, not all Sandpit participants will be able to attend this session and priority will be given to anyone requiring data science expertise. IMPORTANT: It is very likely that you will need to allocate further time to develop projects offline or via further meetings (to be arranged by you and the project team).
