Workshop Report: Harmonizing Life Cycle Assessments for Protein Comparisons

In October 2024, the STFC Food Network's LCA Expert Working Group held a workshop to explore the current and future needs of food producers and manufacturers when undertaking Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to compare alternative protein production methods with meat. 

The workshop is co-hosted by colleagues from the University of York, NNFCC and the University of Manchester including Prof Sonal Choudhary, Dr Raymond Obayi, Katie Noble and Dr Gail Shuttleworth.

The workshop brought together retailers, manufacturers, policy makers and LCA experts in order to find consensus on the best way to harmonise LCA and establish best practice when undertaking LCAs for alternative proteins. The objective is to create a framework that captures practitioners' understanding of what shared set of rules and guidelines can be used to assess and compare protein products more consistently and fairly in the UK.
